One of my favorite restaurants in Denton, Barley & Board, just released their new winter menu, and I couldn't be more excited about it! Last week we decided to check out Barley & Board's new winter menu - we had heard it was incredibly diverse & featured some must-try dishes. Already hosting one of the best, if not THE BEST burger I've had in DFW, their updated menu offered some incredible sandwiches and entrees! Top picks from this visit included the Harvest Turkey sandwich, Mr. Shankly, the Scottish Salmon, The House Reuben, and the Roasted Cauliflower Flatbread.
Both sandwiches are in the top picks for good reason; they offer a dynamic twist on old favorites through texture and few flavor additions. Crafted on sourdough, the Harvest Turkey features smoked bacon, cranberry mostarda (YUM), arugula, and havarti. The cranberry makes this sandwich stand out from others; the addition of a sweet tanginess makes every bite delightful. The House Reuben is certainly unconventional, but I personally loved it. A Reuben fanatic might expect it to be greasier with more sour kraut, but I enjoyed larger pieces of beef. Plus, their russian dressing is seriously addictive!
Moving on to the appetizers and flatbreads, the Roasted Cauliflower flatbread is a must-try here. Featuring garam masala ricotta, lemon, pickled onions, and caper, it didn't taste like cauliflower at all! The sweet and savory flavor combination is reminiscent of exotic spices, and tastes like nothing you've ever had before. The Buratta Cheese appetizer is a great pairing with beer of wine, featuring beet salad, chives and crushed walnuts. The texture is unfamiliar; buratta consists of mozzarella curds inside a warm mozzarella 'bubble'. It wasn't my personal favorite as a standalone dish, but it is a good vegetarian pick on the menu to have with drinks!
The variety of entree choices is very impressive, ranging from vegan noodles to quail, lamb, pork, chicken, and salmon. I am a raging carnivore, so it's no surprise I loved their Scottish Salmon and Lamb Shank (Mr.Shankly). The Scottish Salmon was an exceptionally well-balanced dish, featuring horseradish crust, celeriac puree, brussel sprouts, golden raisins, and dill brown butter. The celery puree and golden raisins were unexpected but welcome additions. Mr.Shankly, a braised lamb shank featuring a warm barley salad and jus, was juicy and delicious. Staying true to their name, Barley & Board created a delicious barley salad, not an easy feat! Their vegan entree option, the Soba - dass Noodles, were very different to past vegan food I've tried, and in a good way. It features yellow curry, coconut, bok choy, chic pea, acorn squash, and cashews. It was far more flavorful than most vegan dishes I have tried, and quite filling. It was unexpected to find an Asian dish here, but B&B made it their own and added a great vegan option to their menu.
Overall I truly enjoyed their new winter menu, full of the unexpected. I highly suggest trying it out for yourself, and get their EXCEPTIONAL burger while you're there!
